Building an underpassage to facilitate snow groomer and pedestrian access
The Challenge
Skiers and ski enthusiasts alike love nothing more than ideal snow conditions on the slopes and the perfect surroundings for spectators to take in the action. Helping to create the right conditions, the local St.Moritz community in Switzerland decided to construct a new passage under the Lärchensprung ski slope. The passage guides visitors to the FIS World Cup races to designated visitor areas, making more direct access for skiing fans. And even more importantly, the passage creates faster and easier access to the ski slope for snow groomers – essential to keeping snow packed for ideal skiing conditions.
The Solution
A 130-metre-long tunnel with asymmetrical cover became the solution needed. Made from ViaPlate® 380 / SA 34 arch profile with a span near 9.0 m and 4.5 m height, this flexible corrugated steel structure was proposed and designed by SYTEC Bausysteme AG.
While in the design phase, materials and structural details were selected that would both require minimal maintenance and provide full functionality of the facility throughout the duration of construction, which was likewise swift thanks to the lightweight, modular nature of the structural plates.
