ViaCon supports technical and sustainable slope stability solution in Bulgaria
The Challenge
In the mining industry in Bulgaria different cases require solutions and optimizations during production, building, and renovation processes in the mines.
When Asarel-Medet AD, a company playing a large role in the Bulgarian mining industry, wanted to recultivate a landfill for the treatment of poor copper and other ore, they invited ViaCon Bulgaria to participate in the tender process to propose a solution.
The Solution
ViaCon Bulgaria proposed three different combinations of products for the renovation of the existing landfill with a slope stabilization geogrid and drainage geocomposite.
The suggested variants included polyester geogrid, HDPE geogrid, and finally a PVA geogrid. Each geogrid is combined with a drainage mat and coir blanket. In evaluating these options, it was determined not to opt for the polyester geogrid due to an aggressive acidic pH environment.
For a better technical and more economical solution, ViaCon Bulgaria made calculations for slope stability and made recommendations for reducing the strength of the geogrids, according to loads (temporary and constant), and under conditions in which they will work. By providing more than one solution ViaCon helped the client choose better technical, more cost-effective and eco-friendly
The ViaCon Advantage
The preliminary technical project in the tender stage was proposed with geogrid polyester – strength 70kN/m. This geogrid was not suitable for pH 2.5-4 because of the raw material, which the client tested again upon ViaCon’s recommendation. The sample geogrid was destroyed in one month by aggressive pH conditions. Working with ViaCon means getting options and expertise as a part of the package.
Advantages include:
With this remediation project, ViaCon Bulgaria continues to partner with this and other customers to offer more economically and environmentally sustainable civil-engineering projects.
